It’s hard to decide whether you should go with a chlorine or saltwater swimming pool. Both have some advantages and disadvantages. Here are some pros and cons of having a saltwater swimming pool installed:
Pros:
Less eye & skin irritation - Chlorine is notorious for causing pain and redness of the eyes, which is something no one wants to endure. It is also common for chlorine swimming pools to dry out the skin and make any preexisting skin issues like eczema worse.
Less maintenance is required - Chlorine swimming pools require additional chlorine tablets to be added regularly, shock needs to be added regularly, and sometimes other chemicals to balance out the pH levels of the pool. Saltwater swimming pools have a generator that releases chlorine, so you don't need chlorine tablets. The only maintenance for the owner is testing the pool water and adding additional salt as needed.
No need to store a very dangerous chemical - Keeping chlorine stored on your property can be a hazard when you have kids running around. If you have kids on your property, make sure the chlorine tablets are stored out of reach. However, saltwater swimming pools don’t require any chlorine tablets, so you don’t have to worry about kids finding them.
Cons:
More expensive than a chlorine pool - Saltwater swimming pools require more of an upfront investment than chlorine swimming pools. So, if you’re considering a saltwater swimming pool make sure you plan for a bit more flexibility with your budget.
Need a professional for pool repairs - A minor flaw that comes with having a saltwater swimming pool is the fact that repairs can’t be done by anyone other than a pool technician. You can certainly try, but there is a lot that goes into fixing saltwater swimming pools.
