Owning an above-ground pool or hot tub can be a lot of responsibility. At first, the maintenance may seem overwhelming but with the right pool supplies and routine - you’ll be a pro in no time. Routinely cleaning a pool or hot tub is crucial to prolong its lifespan, keep bacterial growth at bay, and prevent expensive repairs. It’s important to clean and brush your pool or hot tub on a regular basis to ensure it’s ready for those hot summer days.
Above-ground pools and hot tubs may both be relaxing during the summer days, but their maintenance needs are different. Check out the following sections to gain a better understanding of how to clean an above-ground pool or hot tub during the summer.
Above-Ground Pool Cleaning:
Chlorine
During the summer months, chlorine degrades faster in the sun. This will decrease its effectiveness in ridding your pool of bacteria such as algae. It’s crucial to add the right amount of chlorine to your above-ground pool regularly to ensure it’s safe for use. Using a solar blanket on your above-ground pool will help to preserve the chlorine when it’s not in use.
Pool Supplies
It’s important to use the right products to clean your pool. When fighting off algae, it’s important to shock the bacteria and remove it properly. Brushing the walls and floor will ensure the algae mixes with the chlorine, which kills it. After about 14-24 hours, vacuum the pool to remove the algae build-up. This will prevent future growth and keep the pool cleaner.
Testing
It’s important to run water tests regularly to see the levels of phosphates in your above-ground pool. Phosphates are food for algae when there is food available - algae will grow. When the levels are high, it’s nearly impossible to keep your pool clear. Testing the water regularly will ensure that your above-ground pool is safe for use.
Hot Tub Cleaning:
Hot tubs aren’t as high maintenance as above-ground pools, but they still require a simple schedule. It’s important to maintain good water circulation, clean it regularly, and balance the water chemistry.
Water Circulation
Circulating water helps to keep the hot tub free of contaminants passing through the filters. Depending on the model, your hot tub may already have an automatic circulation schedule. This ensures that it’s run at least once or twice a day for about 15 to 20 minutes. For a hot tub without an automatic cycle, put those filters to work by running it twice a day for 15 to 20 minutes.
Cleaning
Rinse the filters regularly, especially if you’ve been using the hot tub more than usual. Spray the filters every week with a hot tub filter cleaner for deeper cleaning. Every three to four months, deeply clean the hot tub. Start by turning off the power to it and begin draining it. Once the hot tub is empty, spray the interior with water and hot tub cleaner. Hot tub cleaning products will cut through the grime, making the cleaning process easier. The hot tub shell can be wiped down with warm water. During this process, take out the filters and spray them down to remove bacterial build-up. Finally, refill the hot tub and treat the water with either hot tub bromine or chlorine.
Water Chemistry
Testing the water regularly will ensure that the hot tub is safe to use. During the cleaning process, you’ll want to test the water to know how much chlorine or bromine to add.
