When the leaves start to turn and the air fills with the scents of crisp apples, cinnamon, and pumpkin spice, winter is on the way. It’s time to close up the pool and turn your attention to the best source of wintertime water fun: your hot tub!
Hot tubs are perfectly safe to use throughout the colder months; in fact, we encourage it. To help you enjoy warm soaks when the weather is bitter cold, we’ve put together this list of five tips for winter spa enjoyment. Keep reading to learn more!
1. Take care of your spa cover.
Keeping your hot tub properly covered is the key to enjoying it all winter long. Invest in a good cover from the start, one that’s sealed properly and well-insulated. Make sure it stays tight. And keep the cover as clear of ice and snow as you can. If the cover is loaded down with snow, it can become too heavy for you to lift.
2. Keep an eye on the water level.
Your water level should not sink much during the winter. Low water levels can lead to components freezing, which can cause expensive damage to your hot tub. If you’re using the spa often, you’ll notice the water dipping down and can top it off as needed. If you’re not using the hot tub very often, check the water level once a week and refill as necessary.
3. Keep up with routine maintenance.
Even though it’s cold outside, your hot tub still needs regular maintenance. Stay up to date with your usual schedule for water and filter maintenance. Another thing: if your hot tub will need to be refilled over the course of the winter, try to get that done before the snow flies. It’s much easier to change the water before the temperature dips below freezing.
4. Stay safe while you soak.
On a blustery day, relaxing in the hot water feels divine. But you shouldn’t soak for too long. Don’t sit in the hot water for more than 20 minutes, as the shift from extreme heat to extreme cold will place stress on your body. Stay hydrated as you soak (warm beverages are great for this), but avoid alcohol, as that can lead to dehydration. And make sure you have towels, bathrobes, shoes or slippers, and other ways to wrap up warm close by, so you don’t spend too long in the cold in just a bathing suit.
5. Make the area around the hot tub cozy.
Your spa is your outdoor retreat – make it warm and welcoming! A towel warmer, weatherproof rug leading to and from the hot tub, and some heat lamps will all make the area around your hot tub even more luxurious. (Quick tip: Make sure any electrical devices are battery-operated or placed far away from the hot tub to avoid the risk of electrocution.)
